Semantic Versioning

What is Semantic Versioning?

Semantic Versioning (SemVer) is a versioning scheme for software that aims to convey meaning about the underlying changes with each new release. The version number is made up of three components: MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH.

Major Version

  • Increments when there are incompatible API changes.

Minor Version

  • Increments when functionality is added in a backwards-compatible manner.

Patch Version

  • Increments when backwards-compatible bug fixes are introduced.

How to Use Semantic Versioning

  1. Start with version 1.0.0 for your initial release.
  2. Increment the major version for significant changes.
  3. Increment the minor version for new features.
  4. Increment the patch version for small fixes.
